Purpose of the Position


Under the general direction of the Systems Manager, the Signals & Communications Technician is a multi-disciplinary position that will be responsible for installing, repairing, testing, and maintaining various signals and communications systems and apparatuses being used in the transit signaling system including wayside information systems within the Finch West LRT Line.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • To maintain and troubleshoot the assets on the signaling and communication subsystem of the FWLRT line (CBTC, CCTV, PAS, PVIS, IAC, SCADA, GIDS, ETS, BCN network, telephony, DAS, Signaling, other server room, etc.) with specified quality procedures. This will require manual work and sometimes working on powered equipment in a safe and controlled manner;
  • To operate equipment required for maintenance of the system. This may include (but is not limited to) aerial work platforms, rail mounted inspection equipment, and others. Assists in completing assigned work as laid out in the schedule, understanding that emergencies may arise that necessitate a change in the schedule;
  • To perform system software updates and routine tests. Assist other working groups to ensure a fully functional system operation. Shares information freely with colleagues to contribute to the reliability of the communications infrastructure;
  • To report all inconsistencies from drawings, prints or mechanical schematics in the Communication and Signaling systems. To be responsible in recording and keeping track of calibrated tools. To se upcoming issues related to warranty and maintenance program and communicate them to ensure efficient work time;
  • To record status of maintenance and repair work within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) via work orders;
  • To report potential issues and deficiencies to management;
  • To comply with all internal and external requirements including, but not limited to, environmental, health and safety, risk management, and fire protection requirements;
  • To facilitate repair and return of defective circuit cards and components through equipment vendors;
  • To use computers for diagnostics in troubleshooting electronic equipment, software uploading/downloading, downloading event logs, and other various functions;
  • Ensures work completed meets response time and quality requirements of the Project Agreement;
  • Escalates incidents to the Systems Manager;
  • To drive company vehicles when required;
  • To respect, clean and maintain his work environment.


Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
  • Two (2) to four (4) years in a Traffic or LRT signalling environment, Railway, or related industry. Previous experience within rail transit or rail transportation industry is considered an asset;
  • Certificate or license in related field. Must be capable of using computers and control systems. Capable of reading and understanding mechanical/electrical drawings, maintenance manuals and electrical schematics;
  • Basic knowledge of network communication protocols and network device configurations;
  • Equipment and system troubleshooting including resolution skills;
  • An aptitude and comfort in using diagnostic computer systems and related software;
  • Acquired competency required in mechanical and electronic systems;
  • Experience with test methodologies required when replacing vital components in a signal system;
  • Experience in providing high quality service to customers & good interpersonal relationships;
  • Good judgment & effective in solving practical problems, responds quick, calmly, and appropriately to emergency situations;
  • Demonstrates an ability to work efficiently in an unsupervised environment;
  • Demonstrates a strong health, safety, quality, and environmental mindset;
  • Detailed knowledge and previous work experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS);
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Strong decision-making, effective problem solving and risk management skills;
  • Must have effective interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Must be able to multi-task;
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure, and adapt to constant change.
  • Valid Driver’s License (G).

Independence, Initiative, Freedom to Act
Works under the general direction of the System Manager. Performs majority of duties with minimal supervision. Exercises a high degree of initiative and independence in the co-ordination and monitoring of communications, IT, and rail systems.
Consequences of Error:
Errors made in the performance of normal duties could result in significant ineffective and inefficient use of resources, thus adversely affecting the efficiency of MTM asset maintenance/repair operations.
Significant errors could result in potential injury to Finch West LRT employees, contractors, customers, and potential monetary losses for the Finch West LRT.
Inaccurate, incomplete, or untimely reports and information could result in the assignment of failure points and deductions to MTM, causing significant operational downtime, delays, monetary losses or embarrassment.


Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
  • Moderate to heavy physical labour. This work involves:
o Availability for shift work, including weekends, nights and overtime (if necessary)
o Meeting medical fitness for duty requirements
o Ability to grasp and work at heights and elevations
o Ability to perform repetitive physical activities
o Lift/carry, push/pull 50+ pounds
o Bending, stooping & standing
o Climb vertical ladders, stairs, ramps & getting on & off of equipment.
o Reach above shoulders
  • Requires close attention to detail and the ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • General office working conditions, with occasional visits required to shops and field, with associated weather, vehicle and task hazards.
  • Moderate to heavy exposure to industrial processes, including moving vehicles.

Reporting Relationships (Direct/Indirect):
Reports directly to the System Manager.


This position is designated as safety-sensitive under Finch West LRT’s “Fitness for Duty” policy. This means that the employee may be subject to Drug and Alcohol testing when there are reasonable grounds or post-incidents in specific circumstances, such as where there has been a link established between impairment and performing safety sensitive job tasks.
