Te Pae Hauora o Ruahine o Tararua MidCentral (MidCentral) is part of Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand and provides healthcare services to over 180,000 people across the Manawatū, Horowhenua and Tararua regions. With a large hospital campus in Palmerston North, it also provides key health care and support services to neighbouring communities.


The Opportunity
We are looking for a haematology registrar to join our team.
Appointments for 12-24 months are available.
The run is accredited for Haematology training with the College of Australasian Physicians and College of Australasian pathologists. The position is suitable for haematology advanced trainees only and offers excellent training for candidates preparing for the haematology laboratory exams.

The position is to join at team of seven consultant haematologists and haematology registrars based at Palmerston North Hospital.

The service provides haematology services to a population of approximately 400,000, which includes the geographical area of the Manawatu (Palmerston North), Whanganui, Taranaki (New Plymouth and Hawera) and Hawkes Bay (Napier, Hastings). Inpatient care is provided at Palmerston North Hospital with outreach visiting clinics to Whanganui, Hawera, New Plymouth and Hastings. A full range of haematology services is provided including coagulation, thrombosis, non-malignant and malignant haematology including acute myeloid leukaemia and autologous stem cell transplant.

This is a predominantly laboratory position and includes reporting bone marrows and blood films. Trainees can access the laboratory to gain experience in more specialised haematology tests including Hb electrophoresis and blood banking. Experience with surface markers, cytogenetics which are not locally undertaken can be organised with send away lab providers. Clinical commitments include a half day local clinic and a monthly full day clinic in Whanganui.

The on-call commitment is for participation in the oncology after hours rosters for weekdays 4-11pm and weekends 8-11pm. Call is shared among approximately 11 oncology registrars. There is no participation in the night call roster.
